Bornholm

The trip to Bornholm is straightforward. There are not many domestic destinations, and the terminal seems to be combined with some other Scandinavian flights. Our DAT boarding passes and baggage registration are exclusively self-serve, but the baggage is accepted on the conveyor by a lady handling SAS flights. There are no assigned seats; the plane is absolutely full- about 50 seats- and people hurry to the stairs to claim seats nearest the exit. The flight to Ronne airport takes 25 minutes. The plane is similar to a Lego plane: two propellor, small (dual language signs warning not to walk under the wing), and red, green, blue and white livery.
Our son Jeremy is on hand to greet with all his family. Xanthe is shy at first after speaking to us only on Skype for 2 years (half a lifetime) but soon enthusiastically includes us in her social circle. Jonas at six months has a smile for us. We hire a SUV, then it's off to an excellent lunch with Henriette's parents, who live near the forest in the middle of the island.
By mid-afternoon all of us are installed at the Boderne summer beach house, and since it's delightful weather we head straight over the single dune for the beach and test the delights of the Baltic - the water is about 20 degrees, and the waves lap gently. The sand is fine and golden sparkly. The uncrowded beach has some nude families.
Flies are surprisingly plentiful, but make for a good flyswatting game.
An evening meal of smoked mackerel, and Xanthe demonstrates her skills with a selection of iPad games before bedtime-stories.
Jeremy has acquired an 800mm mirror lens for his camera, and is spending nights photographing a meteor storm that occurs near Perseus every year at this time. Too late for us, but on Monday morning the photos are very impressive. He also invites me to look at Venus in the morning sunshine- my eyes are too weak or I'm not looking in the right place, but he takes a snap with his ordinary lens and there it is.

As there is no Internet or phone connection at the house, this Sunday -Monday post will be delayed until midweek.

  1. I've at long last got around to looking at a map to see where Bornholm is, so I now know that it's closer to Sweden and Germany and possibly even Poland than it is to the rest of Denmark. However, the map makes it clear that it's Danish!
